 The literal meaning of the fire extinguisher is that thing that helps to cut off the fire. As there is the classification of fire done on the basis of heat &oxygen, and especially the fuel is taken into concern. Since the fire are of different types recognized by the fire companies so are the extinguishers to treat the certain type of fire.

  •          Class A fire is caused by the solid combustible materials like paper, wood and fabric
  •          Class B fire is cause by flammable liquids
  •          Class C fire is caused by the flammable gases
  •          The fire is kept in Class D when combustible metal act as fuel
  •          When the fire is caused by the electric current then it is Class E fire
  •          The cooking oil causes the fire then fire falls into the Class S and Class K

Fire Extinguishers& their types

Water as fire Extinguisher

The color code or label is in bright red color and this extinguisher is used against the fire caused by the organic materials like paper, cardboard, fabric, textiles, wood and coal. This types of extinguisher is strictly prohibited to use in the fire cause by the electric circuit, kitchen fire and the fire caused by the flammable gases and liquids.

Foam type Extinguisher

Generally these type of extinguisher is labelled with cream color and it is used to put out the fire cause by the organic materials like paper, cardboard, fabrics, textiles, wood, coal, and flammable liquids like paint and petrol etc. So it can be concluded that this extinguisher can be used to put out both types of fire like class A and class B.

This extinguisher should not be used for kitchen fires, fire involving electrical equipment, and flammable materials.


Dry Chemical Powder

These extinguisher are labelled with blue color this type of fire extinguisher can be used to put out the fire caused by the paper, cardboard, fabrics, textiles, wood, coal, flammable liquids, flammable gases like LPG &Acetylene etc., and the fire caused by the electricity which is less than one thousand volts. The extinguishers can also play an important role with the fire suppression system.

This extinguisher cannot be used to put out the fire caused by cooking oil or the equipment which caused the fire is more than thousand volts. This extinguisher also cannot be used to our out the fire caused by an electrical equipment which is more than one thousand volts.

This extinguisher cannot be used for the fire in enclosed space or in the public place because it will lead to the congestion as the particles of the powder can enter the respiratory tract and cause choke.
